The Effect of Anger Rumination on Interpersonal Problem: The Moderated Mediating Effect of Dysfunctional Anger Expression and Effortful Control

Abstract
Background: This study verified the mediated effects of dysfunctional anger expression, as well as the moderated mediating effects of effortful control, in relation to anger rumination and interpersonal problems.

Methods: A total of 361 college students participated in this study by completing the questionnaire provided to examine the research questions. Bootstrapping analysis and SPSS PROCESS macro 3.1 were employed to assess the questionnaire data.

Results: First, the indirect effects of dysfunctional anger expression were verified in relation to anger rumination and interpersonal problems. Second, effortful control in the relationship between anger rumination and dysfunctional anger expression had a moderating effect, with dysfunctional anger expression decreasing as effortful control increased. Third, effortful control moderated the effects of anger rumination on interpersonal problems through dysfunctional anger expression.

Conclusions: The results of the study make a meaningful contribution by providing a concrete understanding of the effect of anger rumination on interpersonal problems. Furthermore, the implications of the study suggest that effortful control can be used as a therapeutic strategy in counseling and treatment scenes.
